The person in the interview already claimed not to have heard the whole tape. Therefore, this whole interview is invalid, and this is still the fault of Fox News to even be persisting to ask these question to the person anyways, who by the way did an excellent job handling this interview.

This "reporter" sounds like a high school student sitting at a bulls^$t session with his buds. He doesn't have the chops to be holding that "News" microphone. His interruptions of his interviewee are unprofessional, and he slings terms like "racist" and "bigot". Unbelievable. It speaks volumes that Fox has people like this newscaster on their payroll. Fortunately, relatively few people "rely" on Fox "News"... I hope.

You can feel the wind form heads spinning Fox because THEY are going to be out of office soon, after almost 8 years of being the propaganda wing of the facist administration of Bush/Cheney - we are going to see more and more of this paniced "reporting" before the November elections.

I love the posts on here from people who sound exactly like the reporter.

Listen to what the guy is saying. He says "you've heard one soundbite from the guy looped over and over again" THATS ALL YOUVE HEARD. You don't know who the guy is, you dont know anything. You jump to conclusions like assholes. I'm willing to bet that if we took one sound bite from ANYONE on this board and looped it over and over and didnt show anything else, everyone would think you were a biggoted asshole too.
  • Pabodie · 1 year ago
Fox News is nothing but a propaganda machine for the right. Rupert Murdoch is what he is, and his network reflects it. No thinking person should take anything on Fox to be "news." It is the TV equivalent of a blog. Therefore, scolding their reporter for behaving in a non-professional manner is like scolding a 2-year old for smearing feces in his hair. He doesn't know any better. You think this guy went to J-school? If he did he learned very little.

This is rediculous. I'm sick and tired of hearing about the defense of any black person called out as a racist. Because NOONE will come to the defense of a white person called out as a racist. THIS is the double standard, not what the father is referring to as a double standard.
  • Pat · 1 year ago
Reverend Wright is no bigot. Farrakhan may be, but nothing Wright said was shocking to me or made me mad. And I'm white. And not "angry."
  • Jordan · 1 year ago
Louis Farrakhan has stated several times that America has a history of racism. This is ABSOLUTELY TRUE. America has racist roots. This is ALSO TRUE.

Now, racism is and should be out of fashion, but what Farrakhan and Wright speak about is how our history has affected our present and will continue to affect our future unless we address it radically (and by radically, I do not mean by violence, I mean urgently.)

Obama's speech, lays it out plainly. And it is prophetic in the way we need to address racism in this country. Israel also has a history. When people discuss Jews it is within this context. Germany also has a history. We need to acknowledge this history. The problem with white america is that no one want's to acknowledge that racism existed (or exists in subtle forms). They say "I didn't own any slaves" as if that makes them less racist, or the country less racist. You may not have owned slaves, but you (and other white people) have benefitted from their ownership and from the accumulated wealth and legacies that have been handed down through the generations.

Ownership of the means of production (industry, banks, manufacturing are examples) was precluded by America's racist policies. These are opportunities that blacks and other minorities did not have.

So what you say now is, "America is the land of opportunity, we made, why don't you". America certainly is, however, because racism existed so long and black people were denied education, ownership (especially land and business) - the infrastructure to allow us to succeed ( schools specifically) are inferior and not conducive to allowing students to excel.

There is an answer to this, and it is in Obama's speech on Race March 18th. www.barackobama.com
  • Bob · 1 year ago
Although America has secular tendencies, the moral voice spoken by the good father shows that there might be hope for our country. The last seven years have been walking backwards in regards to civil rights. That priest is almost as upset as I am with the condecending dialogue within our own country! Fox is pitting America against itself as if we were al Qaeda! Opinions are not meant to be mixed with objective news. The ADD-friendly platform of FOX treats educated people like empty skulls. People don't need your opinions, they need the FACTS. Splicing segments to fit your agenda is the oldest propaganda trick in the book. It is unfortunate that people have to view so many sources of news to get the overlapped REAL story.

Yes, America had a racist past. It is also true that racism still exists in America and that is a sad truth. You don't need to look any further than the Reeevveeerreeennnd Wright or Barack and his hateful wife. Part of the reason racism still raises it ugly head is because of people like them Black or White.
  • anthony · 1 year ago
He likens Mr. Wright's comments to speaking with your family. Let me ask you; is it more likely that someone might reveal their true nature to family or to a well rehearsed public speech?

I think the questions are important. The point is that these are some of the mans inner most feelings and beliefs. They are simple questions that are swept under the rug.

Also, some of these 'snippets' went on for ten or more minutes. How long does someone have to speak in order for it to not be a snippet anyway?

By that logic, many of the things that people hate republican candidates for saying could be boiled down to just being snippets and therefore shouldn't be taken seriously.

It's important to see through the BS on both sides. The fact is that Mr. Wright has made some ridiculous statements, and while Obama shouldn't be necessarily villanized because of his association it does bring into question whether or not a 'possible' future president should be someone that associates himself with someone who has some of these pernicious tendencies.

Come on people - we all know that when someone goes against the agenda of the government he is always labeled as a 'traitor' and unpatriotic. Its a game that obviously everyone plays. You should understand that you dont vote for a government to RULE you (tell you what to do) but to SERVE you(do things for you).
You should focus on problems like poverty - unemployment - education - welfare/insurance.Dont let the right wing pigs get you of track; the aforementioned issues are the ones that should be discussed above all.And dont even DARE to say that that fucktard bush is not a racist...

Wright is AGAINST the US government as you can tell by his life story:

Inspired by President John F. Kennedy's 1961 challenge to "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," Wright gave up his student deferment, left college and joined the United States Marine Corps and became part of the 2nd Marine Division with the rank of private first class. In 1963, after two years of service, Wright then transferred to the United States Navy and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, where he graduated as valedictorian. Having excelled in corpsman school, Wright was then trained as a cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where he graduated as salutatorian. Wright was assigned as part of the medical team charged with care of President Lyndon B. Johnson (Wright cared for Johnson after his 1966 surgery). Before leaving the position in 1967, the White House awarded Wright three letters of commendation.

Wow...this clown got schooled 3 ways from Sunday. It was so beautiful to watch, that I won't even bring up what kind of "reporter" engages in debate with his interviewee. The whole organization is a joke and finally people are waking up.

The father has been around black people quite a bit. I kept hearing 'ebonics' and was waiting for him to lay down some shit. Anyways, he spoke well. Glad he was interviewed.
  • djreedps · 1 year ago
Fox News does this so well. Their reporters and hosts take negative attributes about themselves and then falsely project those attributes onto people they want to make their enemies.

The reporter in this video claims that Reverend Wright is unpatriotic, a hater, and a bigot. Yet that is what Fox News is all about. The nice man being interviewed won't say it but I will.

    Fox News is unpatriotic.
    Fox News hates America.
    Fox News is bigoted.

But the people at Fox News wrap themselves up in the flag so much that their viewers cannot see what is going on.

I'm glad that more and more people outside the Fox News audience can see what damage Fox News has done and still does to this great nation.

To those on here insisting this is a fake video I suggest that you go to Youtube and look up the edited part of this video that Bill O'Reilly uses on his show...I doubt any of you will though...In fact if I was a Fox News watcher looking at this I would be embarrassed too...Just admit defeat gracefully for once...This Reverend handed that "reporter" his ass by simply telling the truth

THIS VIDEO IS NOT A FAKE.

If you have watched Bill Oreilly as much as I (for entertainment value, of course) you'll have recognized this "reporter"'s voice and demeanor. He's a youngish guy, an attack dog for Bill. I've seen clips with him harassing the Vermont judge Bill had weeks of shows about, had him infilatrate a private party on a campus where under 21's were drinking (oh my!), and I've seen him on the show in studio before as well.

His job is to stir shit up with these people he purports to interview.

My last 2 cents: I'm an athiest and I think this reverand guy really know what he's talking about. Kudos.

Fabulous, logical, and right on target. These Fox hacks are such biased, unscrupulous characters that these videos that show them for what they are need to get out to the entire country. This guy, as a personal friend of Wright, was brilliant and showed the Fox reporter for the jerk he was. Beautiful!!! Thanks~!
  • Cameraman · 1 year ago
From a former broadcast news cameraman:
First of all, kudos to this Father for continuing to represent himself and his beliefs in the face of a farce, masquerading as a reporter. No one should have the right to slander people the way this "reporter" is, and then tell people he is fair and balanced. I know, then the news will seem boring, but I'm not afraid of that; what are YOU afraid of?
For those of you who think this video is fake, you're mostly wrong. In my opinion, the video is what we call a feed, uploaded via satellite and recorded (presumably) by the producers of some Fox program in a different locale, probably the O'Reilly show. It has a Fox logo poorly keyed in the corner, but at that stage of the production, I'm not sure why. It's obviously and unabashedly edited, but there seems to be no attempt to hide that.
I think we all need to watch out for reporters who incite us and encourage us to draw false conclusions. This guy is a classic, and he really does give his best effort to twist the words of his subject. Too bad for him, he met his match.
I wish the entire interview feed had simply been posted, so we could maintain more objectivity. I'm not afraid of the simple truth, just those who package it falsely on either side of the fence.
I wish so much we, as a nation, could stop throwing stones (through the media), and have an intelligent, fair discourse about public policy. Our future is truly at risk, due to the inability of our mainstream media to maintain objectivity.
  • Wonderwheel · 1 year ago
Very great comments from this father. Doesn't take the bait from Fox. Rev. Wright said nothing different than Micah said about Israel and Judah. Rev. Wright is right!
  • F Murphy · 1 year ago
Cogent arguements against obviously biased intervewers are such a pleasure. This Priest has his program together. As a society we cannot let propagandists define our agenda. Speak out. Do something
  • lara · 1 year ago
I haven't been so interested in this emphasis on Rev. Wright, because there is no question in my mind about Obama. I think he is a worldly philosopher, who is a little bit of us all, .. not racist. I hate Fox propagandist news, and found this interviewer all too engaged in debate with the pastor. I believe that Rev. Wright's comments may have been been exaggerated and taken out of context, and agree with him on much of his criticism of the gov't. However, the pastor responded to the bogus journalist when asked if Farrakhan's reference to Jews as, "bloodsuckers" was racist, only by standing in staunch defense of a man who has used his powerful orating skills and intellect to expand criticism of policy into broad sweeping hateful comments about an entire ethnicity. I conclude that the pastor may have developed some blind spots towards the opinions of people he admires - that, or, perhaps he agrees with Farrakhan, and because he thinks he's right, he thinks that's not racist. I liked the pastor for defending the spirit of his friend, Rev. Wright, for pointing out that being critical of the U.S. is not anti-American, but it seems evident that his reactions to this have brought him to a somewhat biased stance, plagued with double standards in a reactionary way.
  • sue brett · 1 year ago
i can't believe the interview lasted that long. Proof of the injustices and double standards; if the Father had been Black, they would have cut it off. Reverend Wright told the truth and so did Father flager. There are double standards in this country and there always will be. Blacks are held to a higher standard and subjected to adherence to rules and laws more than any other race. Other races are constantly getting breaks. After hearing the entire speech of Rev. Wright i know Fox is not the network for me. The media is controlling the campaign. Regardless, the majority of the people in this country are not ready for a woman or a black man. They would rather vote in a white male and suffer.

  • Mike Ehr · 1 year ago
Wow, why don't we see people speaking like this on any of the national news channels? Oh, I guess I just answered my own question. This man answered from his heart and life experience and the reporter kept trying to put it back into the pigeonholed categories that the news thrives upon. These days truth doesn't sell, sensationalism does. This is another good example of why we need Ralph Nader in the discussion to keep the discussion on track, and this wonderful man could be at his side.

This interviewer should be fired. He sounds young and uneducated, and doesn't know the first thing about how to conduct a proper interview. Whatever happened to open-ended (rather than leading) questions, with an objective and neutral approach, with taking care not to insert oneself into the story by getting into an on-camera argument with your subject? That is Father Flager from St. Sabina church on the southside of Chicago. His congregation is almost entirely black. He is very active in his community. He was the brain behind the blacking out (paint) of alcohol and cigarette billboard advertisements in poor black neighborhoods in Chicago. He is also behind the clever billboards that ask people to stop listening to trash (violent and disrespectful rap music). He has a nice black history month progam every year with guest speakers. I met Cornell West there a few years ago.

It's astounding! Must be somewhere around 25 to 30 times!!!

This punk is not a journalist. He's an ignorant guy simply trying to bait the Father to say a "Gotcha" sound bite that will fit nicely into his preconceived ideas about this story.

I have been a Catholic, Black Democrat my entire life. I attend mass in Los Angeles.

As a Catholic this priest disgusts me. He is uninformed and evasive. Rev Wright is a racist and delusional. How can a person who believes that the US Government invented AIDS be taken seriously? How can a minister who takes the name of the Lord in vain IN GOD'S HOUSE ("G.D. America") receive any respect?

People like Wright, Jackson, Farakkan, Sharpton et al are an embarassment to every Black person who works to improve themself. Instead of focusing on legitimate problems affecting Black people like high school drop out rates or teenage pregnancy, all they want to do is to shakedown the White man, whine about slavery, and invent ridiculous conspiracy theories. Now that's a great allocation of effort and resources. I have a news flash for all of you: there are no more slaves, and there are no more masters - so get over it.

As a Democrat, the way Obama has handled this megalomaniac Wright has been pathetic. He waited too long to denounce this loon. Forget about being the first Black President, his chance for the nomination has been squandered.

If this is the best Obama can do, he doesn't deserve to be president.

    I'm voting for McCain.

I am sorry to those people that believe that America has dealt with racism. And to those blacks that have never been called a "nigger" by a white person, as I have, and some how feel that a black man whose message is to other blacks that have gone through similar situations as he has, is a bigoted racist I just want to know what country do you live in. Did Rev. Wright call some white a "honky" or " spook" or something? I missed it. I agree not all whites are racist now, but all whites were not prejudice 50 years ago or 100 years ago.
I am only in my twenties, I have obtain a Bachelors in Psychology, and now am working on my masters and I am "improving" myself daily, but yet I have been called a "nigger" by whites more time then I can count on both hands. You tell me when will this stop! This man should not be judged by any one but God his creator. He just had the "balls" to say what a lot of African Americans that still deal with racism in this "freedom and liberty" country what they want to say out loud, and has a right to say it to people that seem to agree with him on the "sound bytes". Everyone has their own voice in this country supposedly. It just stings because some whites want to push it under a rug, like someone said earlier, instead of dealing with it. Racism still exist. America has not yet arrived to the place it needs to be. Just because your "white friends" don't expose it to your face I guess that is what makes it null and void. Some people are so naive and delusional... I don't care who you vote for who ever wins this presidential election it's because God allowed it. So we have to just deal with it, endure it, and gone on like we been doing.

Thanks Father Flager for telling the truth about what J. Wright was saying. The truth, and white America hate dealing with the truth! Racism nearly destroyed Black people!
  • tracy · 1 year ago
Tell the TRUTH and SHAME the DEVIL and that is precisely what father flager did. now if more preachers and pastors 'men of god' had the testicles to speak the truth we will be in a better place!!!!!

The right wingnuts claim that this country was founded in Christianity when it suits their needs and yet they can't stand to hear it when they are called out by "true" Christians. I wish Obama would take the time to defend the words of Rev Wright instead of distancing himself from them. I know that he must do what is necessary in this campaign, but I hope that he found more to agree with in Wright's sermons than he is claiming. If he did he may just be the saving grace for this country that has surely lost it's way. I believe that if he took the chance he may find more agreement with the Rev among us blue collar whites than he thinks there is.

There are plenty of far-left persons in this country that see Reverend Wright as a bigot and a racist who preaches divisiveness. The government gave AIDS to African-Americans? He is a narcissistic, ego maniacal nothing.

wow.....i believe in giving news to show America
and the world whats going on around them and
though I have not heard the entire Wrights speach
I think this news man is making his own news and
views rather than capturing TRUTH! But he picked
    the wrong, well informed Pastor!

Now country is without it's ills and the U.S. is certainly no exception. To think that we as a country have done nothing wrong is like omitting slavery out of the history books. The fact of the matter is that we really want to believe that we have arrived as a nation with equality in most phases of our social order but we are FAR for being fair in most areas of daily living as a country. When Martin Luther King said that he has been to the mountain top and have seen the promise land...it was a very high mountain and a very far promise land. All of these confirmations are very evident in most of white America willing to elect the same old regime'. Even if it means destorying this country. And who said we have arrived...it was apparent with the OJ case..not that OJ was right...now pun intended but black America was willing to except the verdict whether they believed it or not. But white America wanted blood and would not be satisfied until they destroyed him. Regardless of what the law said. So Pastor Wright is not a part of this place we call America. If the media can expose America (U.S) for ills but a black man (Preacher/Pastor) does not live under those amendments that gives him the right to say. America you're wrong. Yes we have made some progress but we have a long long way to go. Pastor Wright simply was man enough to say many of the things that most of which have be whisper in the barber shops, homes, community, school of black America. Can we honest with each other? Pastor Wright was...so why call him a bigot for saying what he believed to be the truth...in the final sum of things...what if he is RIGHT (WRIGHT) :)

There has been a lot of hate in this country ever since Reagan. Maybe it's the way this country should end, but it will go on. These haters will climb back under the rock from which they came. Eventually new ones will take their places. It's just the human condition. Makes you sad. Doesn't it?

If you agree with what Fr. Flager said, you might consider donating to his church. The courage to stand up to the American propaganda machine that Fr. Flager has demonstrated deserves some support. Actions like this will do more good than posting on blogs. I'm going to give him a donation, though I'm Catholic so it's within my sphere. If religion isn't your thing, donate or volunteer for some other cause for unbiased media. Also, if you are on the side of sanity, don't get too discouraged by some of the inflammatory comments posted here. People like Sherry (3 posts down) might be a mother who really wants to believe in her son's cause, but they also might be paid by the right's media think tanks to spam various blogs like this one with dissenting viewpoints. The support for ethical journalism is more wide spread in the public than meets the eye.

What disturbs me about this interview is that Fr. Flager stated that Dr. Martin Luther King would not be proud of America today, referring to the prejudice that supposedly still exists. I don't see that prejudice and I dare say that I haven't seen the kind of prejudice that Dr. Martin Luther King experienced in my 42 years of living. The last time I heard the N word was from someone who grew old and died and that was as a child. And this person wasn't worth listening to anyway.

Dr. King's goal was to abolish segregation. What he and his followers endured while fighting for equal rights were things like sitting in the back of the bus, drinking from seperate water fountains, being excluded or separated in restaurants and other public places, being hosed down with fire hoses and spit upon, being beaten, and ultimately being killed, as Dr. King himself was. Name calling was a part of it too. It was degrading. People were made to feel that others thought they were inferior and less than human. It was a terrible thing that no one should have to endure.

Fr. Flager and Rev. Wright are complaining about the few ignorant wanna-be's that call them names. They also equate being stuck at the top of a building after a natural disaster without the proper amenities, medical attention with the kind of discrimination that Dr. King and his followers endures. Sorry... I don't buy it. Think about it... there is no comparison. One was on purpose and the other was a mistake. Dr. King and his supporters made greater sacrifices than they were already making, such as boycotting the bus and walking to work, to obtain the freedoms they deserved. Now, things are so much better. Every man's rights are equally protected the law but it is up to us to know what our rights are. That way, if harassed, we know what the law says, and we can counter those who try to intimidate us. But are name-calling and prejudice why some with dark skin are living in poverty and breaking the law? No. Otherwise there wouldn't be white-skinned people who also are living in poverty and breaking the law. Poverty and law-breaking has more to do with personal responsibility, individual choices, and sometimes, circumstances such as being in the wrong place at the wrong time, illness, the death of a loved one, divorce, rape, incest. These all happen to the best of us. Granted, there are many laws that still need to be changed and we have way too many micro-laws that not enough people know about today, which means that some of these laws make criminals out of innocent and unsuspecting citizens. We are losing our freedoms slowly because of these, but not exclusively black people, EVERYONE is experiencing this. Granted, police officers today choose to enforce some rediculous laws or risk losing their jobs and these truly make idiots of them when they arrest people for things that aren't even close to looking like a criminal act, but again, it is not a problem that is exclusive to black people. To people of all races and color: Let's stop thinking everyone is out to get us, inform ourselves regarding the law so we can stay out of trouble, and make Dr. King proud of us by working hard to take care of ourselves and our families and to preserve the freedoms that Dr. King and many others have given their lives to protect.

For anyone actually listening - if racism is no longer a problem in this country, then why is race so often brought up in this election? I applaud Father Flager in his ability to use his right of free speech in an intelligent and ethical manner. In addition, to anyone who resorts to using profane language to express him or herself, please note that this is usually the last resort of someone without a valid argument.
